Executive summary

This report asked 25 consumer questions about India's exchanges, depositories and index providers, and recorded what the engines named. It produced 375 citations from 167 domains and 44 organizations, ranked five deep on every question.

NSE leads on 57.6 percent, named in 15 of the 25 questions. BSE follows on 42.4 and Zerodha on 18.4. The two exchanges take first place on 13 questions between them, more than everybody else combined.

The sharper finding is about sources. Pages owned by an exchange, depository or regulator supply 37 of the 375 citations, and on 12 of the 25 questions not one of the fifteen sources is an institutional page.

The visibility score gives a brand five points for first place, four for second and so on down to one for fifth, then divides the total by the maximum available across all 25 questions. Every organization named is ranked.

The Type column says what each organization actually is, because the engines name regulators, exchanges, brokers and data sites in the same breath. Nothing is excluded for being the wrong kind of company; the label does the work instead.

Categories and why we chose them

The five categories were chosen to sit on the commercial surface of market infrastructure rather than on its rulebook. Indices, market data, depository services and the IPO process are what an ordinary investor actually meets, with one category on the rules.

#Category nameReason for selection
1IndicesIndices are the exchanges' most licensed product and the first thing a new investor learns. The questions cover what the two headline indices are, who decides their membership, how to buy one, and what happens when a company is dropped.
2Market data and chartsMarket data is sold by the exchanges and consumed by everybody else. These questions ask where prices, history and filings can be found, whether exchange data is free, and which tool to chart it with, which is where the resale market lives.
3The depositoriesAlmost every Indian investor holds shares at one of two depositories and most could not name which. These questions cover the difference between them, how to see holdings, the consolidated statement, moving between them, and who legally holds the shares.
4IPO allotmentThe IPO is where retail India meets the exchange most directly, and the allotment is the part nobody understands. These questions cover how shares are allocated, how to check, why applications fail, when listing happens, and the unofficial price everybody watches.
5Trading hours and haltsOne category on the rules, as a control. Timings, holidays, circuit limits, the Diwali session and what happens when systems fail are all set by the exchanges and the regulator, with no commercial version of the answer available.

Indices

Five questions on the Nifty and the Sensex: what separates them, who sets the membership, how an ordinary investor buys exposure to one, what a deletion does to a share price, and which index a beginner should watch.

An IPO data site leads and the regulator is third. Where a retail issue is oversubscribed the allotment is a computerised draw of lots, and where it is not, every applicant who bid at or above the cut off gets at least one lot.

How do I check my IPO allotment status?

BSE is named first and not one exchange page is cited. The exchange and the registrars run the status tools the reader is looking for, and the fifteen sources are almost entirely brokers and IPO trackers describing how to use them.

Conclusion

This report is a snapshot. AI engines refresh their sources every week, and the brands that move first tend to hold the top spot. Pages owned by an exchange, depository or regulator supply 37 of the 375 citations, and on 12 of the 25 questions not one of the fifteen sources is an institutional page.
