GEO tools compared in 2026: what each one actually optimizes

Generative engine optimization (GEO) tools look alike on a feature list and optimize three different things underneath. Some poll the AI summary and report what it said. Some check whether a page is structurally eligible to be summarized at all. Some produce the page. Almost nobody does all three, and a shortlist built without that distinction ends up comparing prices on products that solve different problems.

What do GEO tools actually optimize in 2026?
Three different things. Reporting tools poll AI summaries and record whether a brand appeared. Structural tools check whether a page can be parsed, crawled and attributed at all. Production tools write the pages. Most vendors do one well, a few do two, and the feature lists make all of them sound identical.
Which part of GEO matters first?
Structural eligibility, in most cases. A brand missing from every AI summary usually has pages an engine cannot parse or reach, and no amount of extra content fixes that. Reporting tells you the gap exists, and the fix is schema markup, semantic HTML and entity declarations rather than more writing.
Do GEO tools write content?
Some do. Writesonic and AirOps both publish a writing product, and GetXEO produces a designed set of pages. Ahrefs and Scrunch AI improve work that already exists, Semrush sells writing on a separate toolkit, and Peec AI produces nothing and does not claim to. Can one tool cover GEO, answer engine optimization (AEO) and search engine optimization (SEO)?
A few try. The Semrush and Ahrefs suites report all three because they were search suites first, and GetXEO scores all three as separate pillars. The trade is depth against breadth, and a specialist will usually report the chat surface more precisely than any suite does.

Every product in this category can say it does generative engine optimization. Underneath, each one is solving a different part of it.

  • Reporting. Poll the AI summary surface, record whether the brand appeared and where. This is the part most vendors lead with and the part that changes nothing on its own
  • Structural diagnosis. Establish whether a page can be crawled, parsed and attributed. Schema markup, semantic HTML, entity declarations and crawler access, which decide eligibility before content quality matters at all
  • Production. Decide which pages should exist, then write them in a form an engine can lift cleanly. The slowest part, the most expensive, and the only one that moves a number

A team that buys reporting when its problem is structural gets a very precise description of a page nobody can read. A team that buys production when its problem is reporting writes confidently into a gap it never measured. The comparison worth making is which of the three a tool actually covers.

What the reporting tools optimize

Precision about a surface these tools cannot change.

The strongest reporting in this field is genuinely good, and it is worth being clear about what it buys.

Ahrefs indexes six AI surfaces with a published monthly prompt volume for each, which sizes a category rather than a brand. Peec AI separates the sources an engine used from the ones it named, which points at a specific page. Profound publishes a hundred prompts against about nine thousand responses a month on its main paid plan, which is the only depth claim here a reader can check with division.

None of that changes a summary. It tells a team where it stands, how confident the figure is, and which competitor is taking the position. On a surface that regenerates every two to four weeks, precise reporting also has a slower feedback loop than the same precision would have in chat, which is worth knowing before paying for depth.

What the structural tools optimize

Eligibility, which has to come before everything else.

This is the least visible group and frequently the one that matters first.

Conductor reads raw server logs to report which AI bots crawled which pages, and catches the case where JavaScript writes a title no crawler ever runs. Scrunch AI serves agents a clean server rendered document at the CDN, and records what an agent actually received on its last crawl. AthenaHQ manages crawler access by editing a robots and llms file directly on both paid tiers.

Those three do different versions of one job: establishing that an engine can reach the page, read it, and understand what it is about. A technical audit covering schema markup, semantic HTML and entity declarations is the reporting version of the same question, and the difference between reporting it and changing it is a developer queue.

The practical test is simple. If a brand appears in no AI summary anywhere in its category, the problem is almost never that the writing is weak. It is that something structural is stopping the pages from being eligible, and a reporting tool will describe that situation accurately every week without improving it.

What the production tools optimize

The only part of the work that moves a number.

Reporting and diagnosis both describe a position. Producing pages is the only activity on this page that changes one.

Writesonic writes and exports the article, AirOps works on pages the brand does not own, which is where a summary often sources its shortlist, and publishes into the systems content already moves through. Those are two different theories of production and both are real.

GetXEO takes a third route.
